English Premier League: Matchweek 29 Picks and Betting Odds

Holy hell, the chaos.

Matchweek 28 would bring us a couple of upsets, another near-upset to almost bring us to three and then a shootout in our match of the week between Tottenham Hotspur and Wolverhampton.

It was chaos, absolute chaos.

As far as the English Premier League table is concerned, there wasn’t any change there with the top five remaining the same. Liverpool still has a heavy lead for the EPL title (79 points), a 22-point lead as a matter of fact over second-place Manchester City and their 57. In third place, Leicester City takes that position with a total of 50 points, while Chelsea holds No. 4 with their 45 mark. With the Citizens banned from European competitions, Manchester United holds the final Champions League spot while rounding out the top five at 42 points.

In the bottom half of the top 10, there were shifts between Tottenham Hotspur and Wolverhampton after the Wolves would secure a thrilling 3-2 victory over the Spurs. Other moves would be Sheffield United to eighth, while No. 9 Arsenal and No. 10 Burnley would trade the ninth and tenth spots. The rest of the league’s top 10 is as follows: 6. Wolverhampton (42 points), 7. Tottenham Hotspur (40 points), 8. Sheffield United (40 points), 9. Burnley (38 points), 10. Arsenal (37 points).

In Matchweek 28, I would record a 4-1-3 performance with my English Premier League picks, and you can thank the chaos for barely being over .500. Thanks, chaos.

English Premier League Matchweek 28 Review

Right away, English Premier League Matchweek 28 would give us outright, you guessed it, CHAOS. And it would all start with Norwich City pulling a power 1-0 upset over Leicester City.

The game would go all the way to the brink in scoreless fashion, and finally in the 70th minute, Jamal Lewis would hit the first goal of the game for the 1-0 advantage for the Canaries. The score would be fantastic as well, accomplishing an excellent finish after he would control Max Aarons’ cross to arrow a kick past Schmeichel and into the bottom-right corner of the net. And not only would the goal win the game for Norwich, but it would also end their scoring drought. A beautiful goal, indeed.

Norwich have recorded just their fifth Premier League win of the season, two of which have come against Man City (2nd) and Leicester (3rd) at home.

There may be hope yet. 🔰 pic.twitter.com/yBNCn9hh1D

The decision that was both expected and a bit of a surprise was the 2-2 draw between Chelsea, one of the top four teams in the English Premier League, and Bournemouth, a club who is currently in the relegation zone in 18th place. Well, it would end up being a battle, a battle that I would accurately predict.

Things would start off business as usual for the Blues, hitting the first goal of the game at the 33 minute mark, but Bournemouth would then make it interesting with a score themselves at 54′ to tie the match at 1-1, however, it would get even more fascinating just three minutes later (57′) when Bournemouth would get a strike from Joshua King for a 2-1 advantage. As the game neared an end, it appeared that the Cherries would pull off a massive upset, but Chelsea would save themselves in the 85th minute after a Marco Alonso goal. The game would eventually end in a 2-2 draw, but what a thriller it was.

The biggest shocker of the weekend was the matchup between Liverpool and Watford, with it being competitive for a good portion of the match, and then the blowout would happen — but not in the direction that you would think.

The 54′ minute mark would bring the first goal for the Hornets after Ismaila Sarr would score, and it would go  completely downhill for the Reds from there. Just six minutes later, Sarr would hit another goal to bring Watford’s lead to 2-0. The Hornets would send even more shock waves across the English Premier League with a dominating third goal, this time by Troy Deeney, to give Watford the 3-0 win. Yes, a relegation battler took out the top team in the EPL, and not just took them out, but absolutely floored them in 3-0 fashion. It was truly incredible, as was this:

Last, but not least, we had the match of the week between Tottenham Hotspur and Wolverhampton, and the hype would truly be real.

Things started off on a good note for the Spurs after Steven Bergwijn would bring them the first score of the game at the 13′ minute mark, however, the high ride wouldn’t last long for Tottenham, even with some potency left without the services of Harry Kane and Son Heung-min. Wolverhampton just absolutely balled out in this match.

Only 14 minutes after the Spurs hit their first goal, the Wolves would then secure theirs after Matt Doherty would tie the game up, 1-1. It wouldn’t take too long for Tottenham Hotspur to respond either, with them once again taking advantage, this time 2-1, in the 45th minute from a Serge Aurier knock. When I say this was a thriller, it truly was, with Wolverhampton tying the game up again at 2-2 just 12 minutes after Spurs would score. Finally, we would have a battle up until the 73rd minute, when Raul Jimenez (73′) would score the last goal of the game to give the Wolves the 3-2 victory. You have to consider this game as one of the best of this season.

English Premier League Matchweek 29 Picks and Betting Odds
Liverpool vs. AFC Bournemouth

BETTING ODDS: Liverpool (-392) | AFC Bournemouth (+1130) | Draw (+538) | Over/Under (3)
WHEN: Saturday, March 7, 7:30 AM ET
WHERE: Anfield, Liverpool, England

The 3-0 beating that Liverpool suffered to AFC Bournemouth would be incredibly shocking, and you better believe that the Reds will do everything in their power to get back on the winning track here in Matchweek 29. And they certainly have the leverage to do so with being back home at Anfield.

Before the defeat, Liverpool was riding a powerful 44-game winning streak, which makes the 3-0 blowout loss even more shocking. Despite the defeat though, everything is still way in the green for the Reds to win the English Premier League championship — they have a clearway 22-point lead for the title. Liverpool will have all the motivation in the world to get back to winning this weekend and will be extraordinarily aggressive to do so. You’ve got to lean with the Reds to pick up three points on Saturday.

Joe Gomez should be back in action for Liverpool after missing the Watford match with an injury, so expect him to play against AFC Bournemouth, his recovery is almost complete. You’ve also got the fact that the Cherries have been doing horrible on the defensive side of the ball, allowing a total of seven goals in their last three games.

With the circumstances being what they are, why on earth wouldn’t you bet on Liverpool in this one? Another relegation battler, sure, but this time, things are very different with the Reds losing last week. On top of that, Liverpool would already outplay Bournemouth earlier in the season, so the history is already there. Give me the Reds for a big win in this one.

BETTING PREDICTION: Liverpool 3, AFC Bournemouth 1

Arsenal vs. West Ham United

BETTING ODDS: Arsenal (-174) | West Ham United (+500) | Draw (+330) | Over/Under (3)
WHEN: Saturday, March 7, 10:00 AM ET
WHERE: Emirates Stadium, London, England

In Matchweek 28, Arsenal wouldn’t be in action, but they’re back this weekend in the London derby when they square off against West Ham United in their Emirates Stadium.

Despite the lack of EPL action last week, they would be involved in the Europa League, where they would suffer a surprising exit after taking a defeat in the Round of 32 to Olympiacos. With the loss, you’ve got to think that gives the Gunners the mindset that they need to get back on the winning track, and they’ll be ratcheting up the aggression this weekend as a result — the Hammers need to be on full alert. Keep an eye on Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, as he’ll be sure to have a boat load of motivation to win too, and will be giving West Ham’s defense major problems as a result.

For West Ham United, they were in complete desperation mode as far as needing to get a win, and they would accomplish that last weekend over Southampton. It’s solid confidence for the Hammers heading into Saturday, and they’ll need it, as Arsenal is going to be much tougher to take out than the Saints will be. And with this being a rivalry game, you know the Gunners will be on their toes for this one, so it’ll be hard to catch them off-guard.

With that being said though, it is a rivalry, and that should make for an entertaining contest overall, but you’ve got to give the win to Arsenal in this one. Plus, the match is on their home ground, and they’ve also been in excellent form as of late with wins over Newcastle United and Everton in their past two games. For sure, take the Gunners for the win.

BETTING PREDICTION: Arsenal 3, West Ham United 1

Crystal Palace vs. Watford

BETTING ODDS: Crystal Palace (+160) | Watford (+190) | Draw (+220) | Over/Under (2.5)
WHEN: Saturday, March 7, 10:00 AM ET
WHERE: Selhurst Park Stadium, London, England

Crystal Palace has been absolutely fantastic as of late, riding a streak of two consecutive wins with victories over Newcastle United and Brighton & Hove Albion. This weekend, they’ll be looking to push that stretch to three when they’re at their Selhurst Park to host Watford.

The Eagles deserve a lot of credit as of late, with improved play and wins to show for it, however, it may be too late to qualify for any European tournaments at this point in the season. Still though, Palace will bring some solid production this week and the defense should do its thing, per usual, and will have them in a position to get a win.

With Watford, they’re coming off of an absolutely phenomenal win over first place Liverpool last week, ending their amazing 44-game winning streak. And not only would they get the win either, but it was how they did it that would impress everyone so much, winning in dominating 3-0 fashion. It was just a brilliant display of football from the Hornets.

With the form that Watford is in and the confidence that they’re sure to have at the moment, you’ve got to bet on the Hornets getting something out of this weekend other than a loss. despite them being on the road. I’ve got a very tight match in this one, and with both clubs being on top of their game, give me an exciting contest that ends in a draw. I like both teams right now, and don’t really want to pick against either one.

BETTING PREDICTION: Crystal Palace 1, Watford 1

Sheffield United vs. Norwich City

BETTING ODDS: Sheffield United (-149) | Norwich City (+481) | Draw (+279) | Over/Under (2.5)
WHEN: Saturday, March 7, 10:00 AM ET
WHERE: Bramall Lane, Sheffield, England

This Saturday at Bramall Lane, we have a match that squares off Sheffield United against Norwich City, two clubs with completely different goals at this point in the season.

For the Blades, times are important for them right now, being in contention for a spot in next year’s Europa League. They need to win this match, and will have all the motivation in the world to do so. Also in this game, Sheffield United are looking to get their seventh win of the season on their home ground.

With the Canaries, they would pull off a major upset in Matchweek 29 with a defeat of Leicester City, the third place team in the English Premier League. The Foxes would be without their top scorer in Jamie Vardy, but it was still pretty impressive that Norwich City was able to pull off the victory.

Despite the great performance and upset victory though, you can’t take the Canaries in this contest, and that’s because they’re pretty poor on the road. With this being the case, there’s plenty of value to lay your money on Sheffield United. Plus, the Blades would take out Norwich City at their house at Carrow Road in a 2-1 win. Certainly take Sheffield United in this one.

BETTING PREDICTION: Sheffield United 2, Norwich City 1

Southampton vs. Newcastle United

BETTING ODDS: Southampton (-150) | Newcastle United (+436) | Draw (+301) | Over/Under (2.5)
WHEN: Saturday, March 7, 10:00 AM ET
WHERE: St. Mary’s Stadium, Southampton, England

In their last English Premier League contest, there would be loads of disappointment for Southampton as they would suffer a 3-1 setback against West Ham United, and they’ll be looking to make up for it this weekend when they host Newcastle United on Saturday.

Last weekend in London, the Saints would take the loss, but in their defense, it was a bit tainted with their number one scorer Danny Ings coming off of the bench to play. With that being said, it does appear that he’ll back in the starting XI when they take on Newcastle United, and with him being back in full-time action, I look for Southampton to pick up the victory and three points.

The last time that Newcastle United was on the road, they would take a horrible 4-0 loss to Arsenal. Needless to say, the Magpies aren’t in the best form at the current moment. Also, their January signing in Valentino Lazaro is suspended and out of action.

And that’s not all, Newcastle United hasn’t scored in four consecutive EPL fixtures, it’s just been bad for them. So, you should know the drill by now: Take Southampton.

BETTING PREDICTION: Southampton 2, Newcastle United 0

Wolverhampton vs. Brighton & Hove Albion

BETTING ODDS: Wolverhampton (-153) | Brighton & Hove Albion (+458) | Draw (+299) | Over/Under (2.5)
WHEN: Saturday, March 7, 10:00 AM ET
WHERE: Molineux Stadium, Wolverhampton, England

They might have suffered the 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace last weekend, but they would put up a solid performance.on their home ground against the visitors from London.

The Seagulls are in the No. 15 spot on the league table and are scratching and clawing to keep themselves out of the relegation zone, so they have plenty to play for in this one. Expect them to bring their A-game against Wolverhampton. With that being said, Brighton & Hove Albion aren’t the best when it comes to playing on the road, and that alone is why you should keep your money away from them, especially at Wolverhampton’s Molineux Stadium.

Speaking of the Wolves, they have been in excellent form throughout the second half of the campaign. They would get a thrilling 3-2 victory over Tottenham Hotspur last week, and they’ll be looking to build on that to accomplish a spot in the Champions League. And they certainly have one of the best opponents to grab three points this weekend in relegation battler Brighton.

With the goals they’re chasing and how aggressive they’ll play to get them done, you have to take Wolverhampton for the victory in this one, and I’ve already mentioned they have the home ground advantage as well. Keep an eye on Wolves’ Diogo Jota, who has been very potent as of late with his scoring. He could slice up the Seagulls easily this weekend.

BETTING PREDICTION: Wolverhampton 2, Brighton & Hove Albion 0

Burnley vs. Tottenham Hotspur

BETTING ODDS: Burnley (+170) | Tottenham Hotspur (+170) | Draw (+225) | Over/Under (2.5)
WHEN: Saturday, March 7, 12:30 PM ET
WHERE: Turf Moor, Burnley, England

In Matchweek 28, Burnley would partake in a very competitive game against Newcastle United that would end up with minimal action in a 0-0 draw. This weekend on their home ground of Turf Moor, the Clarets will be looking to get back on the winning track against a beat-up Tottenham Hotspur team.

The Clarets have been in great form, going undefeated in six straight fixtures in the English Premier League. And the reason why they’ve been playing so well is because of motivation to qualify for a spot in the European competitions. Expect more quality play from them this weekend against Spurs, because they know a win would keep them in the hunt.

As mentioned earlier, Tottenham is a beat up club, being without both of their stars in Harry Kane and Heung-Min Son, and it makes life tough for Jose Mourinho at the manager role. With this being the case, there’s a load of value in betting on Burnley winning this contest. Plain and simple, the Spurs just have a hard time winning out their star duo, and that makes things even tougher on the road.

The last time the two clubs met at Burney’s Turf Moor, it would be the Clarets who would get the 2-1 decision for the win. With all of the circumstances going on, you’ve got to take Burnley in this one. I don’t see Tottenham Hotspur surviving this trip.

BETTING PREDICTION: Burnley 1, Tottenham Hotspur 0

Chelsea vs. Everton

BETTING ODDS: Chelsea (-118) | Everton (+336) | Draw (+289) | Over/Under (2.5)
WHEN: Sunday, March 8, 10:00 AM ET
WHERE: Stamford Bridge, London, England

Before we get to the main event between Manchester United and Manchester City on Sunday, we have a fun matchup between the likes of Chelsea and Everton at London’s Stamford Bridge.

During a 2-2 draw with AFC Bournemouth last weekend, Chelsea would have major issues across the map when it came to their defense, however, the lost two points wouldn’t hurt their chances at a spot in the Champions League. With that being said, they obviously don’t want to make losing a habit, and they would like to lock up a top four spot as soon as they can. As a result, you can expect Frank Lampard’s team to come into this match with aggression, and they will be on the attack throughout against the Toffees.

On the other hand with Everton, they also have a ton of motivation themselves to get a victory, and that’s because there within reach of getting a place in the Europa League. As a result, you can expect a power matchup in this contest. One thing is for sure in this game: With the potency of both teams, you can expect scores from both sides, so take that Over.

Earlier this season, the two clubs would meet up at Goodison Park, and there, it would be the Toffees who would grab the 3-1 victory over the Blues. This go-around at Stamford Bridge, it’s a guarantee that both teams will score, which is why you should certainly take the Over. As far as the game decision, give me a draw.

BETTING PREDICTION: Chelsea 1, Everton 1

Manchester United vs. Manchester City (Match of the Week)

BETTING ODDS: Manchester United (+400) | Manchester City (-165) | Draw (+335) | Over/Under (3)
WHEN: Sunday, March 8, 12:30 PM ET
WHERE: Old Trafford, Greater Manchester, England

Oh, it’s all so glorious when these two meet up, and you better believe that it’s going to be packed at Old Trafford for this iconic rivalry between Manchester United and Manchester City.

For the Citizens, they’re coming into this game fresh off of a Carabao Cup championship, and they’ll be looking to bring themselves closer to Liverpool on the English Premier League table. With a victory being on Man City’s mind in a rivalry contest, you can expect the Sky Blues to bring their attacking style in full force in this one, especially — especially — against Manchester United. The Red Devils better be on point here in Matchweek 29, and this is definitely true when you consider how hot Gabriel Jesus has been for the Citizens as of late, who by the way will keep his spot in the starting XI.

With all of that being said though, don’t count out Manchester United in this one at all, and that’s because they still have aspirations to qualify for the Champions League. With everything laid out on the table, you can definitely expect some fireworks at the “Theatre of Dreams.”

So, who wins the match of the week? Well, though we always get excited for this rivalry, the facts are what they are: Man United is still without their star attacker in Marcus Rashford, who has been out with a double stress fracture in his back. With such a big weapon out of action, you’ve got to side with Man City and their power in this match. Maybe their January signing Bruno Fernandes can do some damage against City this weekend, but I just see Manchester City being too much for Manchester United to handle, no matter how great Fernandes has been.

BETTING PREDICTION: Manchester City 2, Manchester United 1

Leicester City vs. Aston Villa

BETTING ODDS: Leicester City (-243) | Aston Villa (-695) | Draw (+409) | Over/Under (3)
WHEN: Monday, March 9, 4:00 PM ET
WHERE: King Power Stadium, Leicester, England

Last week against last place Norwich City, power Leicester City would take a shocking 1-0 defeat, but in their defense, they would be without their star Jamie Vardy. It was obvious that the Foxes would miss their striker at Carrow Road, but the good news is their top scorer should be back in action for the Aston Villa match.

Good thing too, because Leicester is on a mission to grab a spot in the Champions League, so this weekend is extraordinarily important for them.

For the Villans, they’ve got motivation themselves, but from the complete opposite of the spectrum, and that’s looking to climb out of the relegation zone — they currently sit at the 19th spot on the English Premier League table. With Aston Villa though, their momentum took a bit of a blow when they would lose to Manchester United in the Carabo Cub final, which could play a factor against Leicester City. At the end of the day, the Villans are in the relegation zone.

Leicester City will be looking for their ninth home win of the season, and with Jamie Vardy coming back and Aston Villa being a relegation warrior, the Foxes are sitting pretty to get the victory for this week’s Monday Night Football. Give me Leicester City for the big win.

BETTING PREDICTION: Leicester City 3, Aston Villa 1
