How To Get Motivated To Work In The Morningamanda linette meder

For both reasons known and reasons unknown, you may occasionally find yourself in a morning slump, wondering what the reason is for getting up at all. This is normal, natural, and happens to all of us.

You may stay in this state of needing motivation to get out of bed for a month or two, though pretty soon you’ll realize you want your zest back. You had that spark once, you’ll remember it and you can get it back.

When my dog transitioned over the rainbow bridge last spring, I went through a period where I had needed a boost getting out of bed in the morning.

We had a morning routine, and without her there, I was without that familiar process.

Some days, I didn’t make it to my desk until three pm.

When you work from home, this is fine only for a little bit of time. It sounds like ‘the life’ from a distance, but the whole thing disrupts your biological clock and sleep schedule.

Plus, if you want to stay connected to the human race, you’ll want to start getting up and getting motivated when the rest of the world is getting up and moving for the day.

So, I took that time to learn things that motivated me in the morning and find ways that I could get that boost back into the day.

I tried and tested what worked and what didn’t work to get up and going in the morning.

So if you’re needing a boost, grieving the loss of a loved one, or going through a mood and want your morning zest back, it can happen.

I got mine back, and these are the things that worked for me –

Activate the mind – inhale some essential oils

Essential oil and scent stimulates the limbic system, which is a network of nerves in the brain involved with basic emotion and drive.

When you inhale certain scents, it can promote positive shifts in your mood and the thoughts you have.

The aroma of essential oils can be incredibly stimulating in promoting all sorts of positive emotional and motivational changes, supporting what meditation can do.

Here’s how to use essential oils to boost your morning routine –

First thing upon waking, before you even put food in your body, grab some essential oils that can stimulate positive emotions and motivation, such as:

Any uplifting citrus scent, such as Orange, Tangerine, Lemon or Bergamot

Any invigorating evergreen scent such as Spruce or Pine

Any emotionally supportive scent such as Ylang Ylang, Chamomile, Rose or Jasmine.

My go-to’s are Lemongrass or Orange. The Motivation Blend by Young Living, which includes Roman Chamomile, Black Spruce, Ylang Ylang and Lavender is also nice.

Take these steps to diffuse essential oils on yourself:

Add a drop of one or two of the oils in your hands

Roll the oils around in your palms to blend

Rub your hands together

Cup your palms over your nose

Take ten big deep breaths and you’re awake

This is a very low key way of diffusing oils without an actual diffuser and boost of mood elevation that can support the brain.

You can also put a mix of two or three of the above oils in an electric diffuser, too. Let it mist for about 10 minutes gives you a similar effect, This is a less intense shot of pure awake activation than the hand-cupping activity, but still works.

Activate the body – drink a warm beverage

Warm drinks, whether you do coffee, tea, or warmed up water with lemon, can promote digestion, which gets the entire internal organ system up and going.

Personally, I have mostly given up coffee, except as a treat when I’m out and about, and I’ve mainly switched to tea.

I’ve discovered that on tea, my emotional balance is better, my skin is clearer, and my digestion is more fluid. I also like the fact that with most teas, you can re-steep the leaves, making tea a more cost-effective beverage, for me, overall.

Currently, I’m drinking White Tea from Rishi.

Sometimes I’ll switch it up with a mug of Traditional Medicinals Cup of Sunshine (Amazon) in the afternoons.

Activate the spirit – go stand outside for 5 minutes

Standing outside serves two purposes:

– First, on an instinctual level, it puts you in tune with the energy of the day and can give you a guiding point as to what needs to get done that day.

When you work from home, and even when you work from an office, on some level, you have to be intuitively in touch with the tasks at hand that need to be accomplished most.

Taking a minute to sense the environment first thing in the morning helps to organize the thoughts, and it rebalances your intuitive touchpoint on that day’s most necessary tasks.

– The second purpose this serves is that it stimulates a positive sleep-wake cycle that lets your body know that it’s definitely wake-up time.

This happens through the sheer amount of sunlight that comes in through the cells of the body when outside.

The amount of sunlight that hits your skin when outside can reach up to 5,000 foot-candles.

Where in an indoor environment, such as inside an office, only 20-50 foot candles are usual in office buildings.

Meaning, stepping outside gives you a nice big blast of sunlight even if it’s cloudy, to wake-up those cells and stimulate your biological clock.

Once you’ve activated the mind, the body, and the spirit

Have a small breakfast

Interact positively with another person, such as in an online group exchange

Do a warm-up activity checking your emails, light editing, house chores, etc

This can all help stimulate your mood to get you going for the day.

For example, I find that taking care of my outdoor animals first thing in the morning gives me a sense of purpose and appreciation for the day. It also fills that care-gap that I used to have when my dog was still alive.

I also find that doing my daily writing in the morning also helps me get up and get moving for the day. Some people like to meditate in the mornings, but I’ve found this sometimes relaxes me too much, so I occasionally save my meditations for the afternoon lull, sometime around 3 or 4 pm.

Overall, creating any type of wake-up ritual that simulates all three systems: mind, the body, and the spirit can give you the boost you need to get going for anything – and these are the three rituals I’ve found that have worked best.
