“No one comes to his true selfhood by being what society wants him to be nor by doing what it wants him to do. On the contrary, they are more often than not the very shackles which keep us from our true destiny.”
– Quote by author Stephen Hoeller.
We are all born with unique creative sparks within: talents, revelations, dreams, and childlike wonder. Upon cultivating this spark, it can manifest into the flames which burn away the separation between you and your passions. Despite everyone being capable of activating his innate spark, it is tragic that only a few manage to pull through in the long run. As time goes by, generations of individuals are diminished. Their spark is reduced due to relatable factors such as fear, anxiety, social validation, and monetary gains. Once the loss of ambition, individuals put their passions aside in exchange for an acceptable role in society. Descending further into passivity, they not only lose sight of their creative spark but also of who they are in the process of a never-ending rat race for short-term gains. We mutter inwardly, "If I can just gamble with the right numbers, find a high-paying job, move to another country, or struggle for years to obtain the college degree that’s on-demand, then I will finally live the good life deemed and feel like a success.”
I am here today to suggest to you an alternative path. Let us not waste years of our lives focusing on gainful pursuits and external validations. We can live a better life now, by igniting the flaming spark within! Questions arise, how must we ignite this spark? How do we keep the flame burning? The answer is simple, yet difficult in practice. One has to take it upon himself to devout time to a creative endeavor such as mastering a skill or finishing a project with three key ingredients: 1) Discipline, 2) Tenacity, and 3) Patience. Over time, the fruits of your labor will ripen in not just impressive results, but opportunities being made available with endless possibilities and an overflow of potential from within. These three ingredients are not just necessary for igniting one’s passion, they are essential in burning away the character you once had. You are reborn as one with an inextinguishable fire within, burning away all external obstructions and internal forces that once stopped you from maximizing your potential. As 19th-century philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche puts it;
“You must be ready to burn yourself in your own flame; how could you rise anew if you have not first become ashes?”
This inner spark at its core exists because each one was created in the image and likeness of God. This spark is the essence of your life making you visionary, creative, and desiring the adventure of a unique achievement. In the beginning, when God saw darkness, he made light, when he saw chaos, he made beauty. That same kind of spark is inside of us. If we seek after who God created us to be that unleashed potential is explained in this scripture, "Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love Him" (1 Corinthians 2:9)
In conclusion, I encourage all of you to take this path of living more passionately now. Even if there are little financial rewards, and the recognition in society seems insignificant, it is still a path worth taking. If you pursue this path, you counter the state of stagnation. You free yourself from those things that blind you from ever seeing the light inside of you.
